Retinoids are chemically very similar to vitamin A (retinol), which is an essential nutrient required for healthy skin. Reports vary between 2 and 9 weeks to see an initial improvement, and sometimes as many as 12 weeks before the full improvement is noticeable. This is often the case, even if tretinoin is used on a daily basis. One other side-effect linked to tretinoin, in addition to acne worsening initially, is thinning of the skin. This effect is also noted in another first-generation retinoid, isotretinoin. Thin skin may not be too much of an issue, however, if certain activities can be avoided, namely hair removal by waxing. Also, sunscreen with an SPF 15 or higher is recommended if sun exposure is expected.

Although still used in many acne treatments, tretinoin has been somewhat upstaged by newer second and third-generation retinoids, which are more specifically targeted towards acne problems. It is still used, however, in many common topical acne treatments, including Avita, Renova Emollient, Retin-A, and Retin-A Micro, all well-known products. When trying to treat acne, retinoids are very useful in preventing the clogging of pores that can lead to acne problems. A Link Between Acne And Exercise? Don't Sweat It!

There are many different views on the relationship between acne and exercise, mainly focusing on the role of sweat. Some believe that sweat is helpful in cleaning the pores through releasing stored toxins in the skin, thus preventing acne from occurring. More common is the belief that that sweat causes acne, and that exercise can lead to huge breakouts on the face and other areas. So which is it? Does sweat directly cause acne? First, let's explore how the sweating process actually works.

Organs are groups of tissues that work together towards a common purpose; the skin is reputed to be the human body's largest organ. The skin actually participates in bodily processes in a number of different ways. A primary function is the protection of the internal body against damage and injury. The skin is also key in containing vital fluids, such as blood and water. One function of the skin that many of us notice on a regular basis is the role that it plays in regulating body temperature. When a person begins to overheat, the body releases sweat up the sweat ducts to the skin's surface. When that surface sweat evaporates, the process removes latent heat from the body, thus cooling it.

There are two primary types of sweat glands, but only one kind that sounds like it could really play a role in preventing or creating acne. Coiled deep below the skin, the eccrine sweat glands are found over nearly the entire surface of the body, especially on the palms of the hands, soles of the feet, and the forehead. These glands are the ones that are responsible for temperature regulation, and are activated through heat and physical activity. The sweat excreted by the eccrine glands is composed primarily of water, but also contains sodium chloride (salt), and small amounts of fatty materials, urea, and other cellular wastes.

So if sweating does remove wastes from the body, does it actually play a role in preventing acne breakouts? Not exactly, seems to be the general consensus. Acne is often called a disorder of the sebaceous glands, created when a variety of conditions occur together. In healthy skin, natural oils are produced in the sebaceous glands, and travel to the skin's surface via hair follicles. When dead skin cells, excess sebum, or other factors plug those pores, sebum production continues, swelling the hair follicle. In theory, it should be fairly easy to avoid the link between acne and exercise. Recommendations include keeping hair tied back off the face and wearing loose clothing while exercising, so that bacteria on the back, chest, and arms aren't trapped in direct contact with the skin. Loose clothing also lessens the irritation caused by friction. Acne Is A Simple Skin Infection That Distresses Anyone Inflicted

Eczema is a skin condition and we are going to explore some of the most common problems associated with it.Eczema, sometimes known as dermatitis, affects both males and females. If you're a teen with acne, it's no secret that this can be a particularly traumatic experience. Although almost all teenagers have acne, when it's on your own face it must seem that much more noticeable, that much bigger, and that much more embarrassing. For teenagers going through an acne crisis, there are two pieces of really good news. The first bit of good news is that the old myths have been dispelled. Until recently, acne was thought to be rooted either in poor hygiene practices, or a direct result of fatty, greasy eating habits. Research has shown that acne is actually much more related to hormone function and genetics, and it is now more widely recognized that acne is not your own fault.

The second piece of really good news is that there are now many different ways to treat a teenage acne problem. Gone are the days of using the same old bar of soap that you use on your feet to clean your face as well! No more do you have to apply a generic moisturizer or, if you have oily skin, avoid moisturizers altogether! While the appearance of acne is not something entirely under your control, there are certainly several things you can do to prevent acne breakouts and heal existing acne more quickly. Dermatologists and skin care specialists suggest the following guidelines for basic teenage acne control:

1) Wash properly
When it comes to washing your face, more is not necessarily better. By washing your face once or twice a day with a gentle cleanser, you can get rid of excess oil and bacteria on your skin. But when you wash your face several times a day, you are actually preventing your skin from regenerating some of that healthy, protective oil. Your skin's response to this is to make even more oil since the original amount wasn't enough, and the end result is oilier skin than when you started. Another thing to avoid when washing your skin is the use of really harsh cleansers. Exfoliating cleansers can be great for removing dead skin cells, but you do not want to use them daily, and harsh chemicals can over-dry your skin, leaving it tight and dehydrated.

First we should talk about coffee, pop and alcohol, and see what the connection is to skin problems. In my opinion, the way I interpret coffee, pop and alcohol is that they contribute several elements to your body that assist in major changes to your skin.

Caffeine and sugar in coffee and pop, plus alcohols are partial diuretics that assist in drawing more water out of your body than bringing water back in, plus they're a stimulant and can prevent you from getting the recommended amount of sleep that your body needs, which ranges from at least 7 to 8 hours per night. What this all means is that by consuming these products daily, they could be changing the entire dynamics of your body, and affecting you dramatically without you even realizing the changes.

What happens is this: your body may become over stimulated with all these items going through your system, and either consumed separately or in combination, your skin may seriously become affected by these products. Depending on your body's tolerance level, your reactions could be reflected by the daily consumption.

Let's look at the connection of the cleansers, creams, and acne cosmetics you're currently using, and see why some may not work to prevent your acne breakouts or increased blackheads. When taking a common sense approach to the ingredients, avoid any product that will shrink your pores! Now this information may contradict products that say they reduce pore size, and make them look less visible.

What that means I don't know. Stress, in my opinion, is the biggest contributor to your body's lifestyle changes, and believe it or not, it seems to tie in with everything above, because stress is caused by many elements from the types of food you consume, to the everyday lifestyle you lead with your work and play.

Again, I'm not a doctor, but even with my own body I notice that if I don't get enough sleep, or I worry about a project that has to be completed, and the everyday choices I make in cleaning my skin all is in some way a contributor to stress, and the changes in my body. Six Smoothie Recipes for Constipation and Acne Relief

I recommend drinking a morning smoothie if you have constipation or if you have skin problems like acne. Drinking a high fiber smoothie relieves and prevents constipation. It will also provide the nutrients that are necessary for having or keeping a nice clean and smooth skin.

So, here are the six smoothie recipes you can blend.

. Apple Smoothie
. Apple-Barley Smoothie
� Apricot Smoothie
� Peach-Rice Dream Smoothie
� Pineapple Smoothie
� Strawberry Smoothie

Apple Smoothie

Mix in the blender the following.

1-2 small apples cut into wedges
1 banana
1 cup 50:50 rice dream: almond milk
� cup or less of raisins soaked overnight
1-teaspoon honey
1-2 cubes of ice
1-teaspoon lecithin granules
2 tablespoons flax seed oil

Start by mixing the banana and the liquids. Then add slices of apples to get the consistency you like. In all of your smoothies add flax seed oil for nice smooth skin. I also add a tablespoon of flax seed straight into the blender and the blender will chop them up.

Apple-Barley Smoothie

Mix in the blender the following.

1 cup of sliced apples with peel
1/2 cup of cooked barley
1/4 cup of soaked raisins
1/4 teaspoon of vanilla flavoring
1-1 � cup of 50:50 rice dream: almond milk
1-teaspoon lecithin granules
2 Tablespoons flax seed oil

Make sure you use the lecithin granules in these smoothies since lecithin helps to breakdown the flax oil into tiny droplets and makes it more digestible.

Apricot Smoothie

One cup of fresh apricots or dried apricots that were soaked overnight
Juice of 1/2 a lemon
Two oz. of prune juice
One teaspoon or more of oat ban
One teaspoon of mineral whey
One tablespoon of flax seed oil
One tablespoon of lecithin granules

Add a slight amount of distilled water or ice cubes to make the consistency to your liking. This smoothie is good for constipation and acne.

Peach-Rice Dream Smoothie

Mix in the blender:

2 fresh peaches with peel
1-cup rice dream
1/2 banana
1-teaspoon sesame seeds
1-teaspoon sunflower seed
1-tablespoon lecithin granules
2 tablespoons flax seed oil
In place of rice dream you can use almond milk. I now only use almond milk to make my smoothies. Place all of the seeds straight into the blender. This smoothie has plenty of fiber. You may want to increase the amount of sesame and sunflower seeds.

Pineapple Smoothie

Mix the following in a blender.

1-2 cups of fresh pineapples
1/2 cups apple slices
1/4-cup fresh apple juice
1/2-cup almond milk (more or less as needed)
1 banana
1-tablespoon lecithin
2-tablespoons flax seeds
2 teaspoons bran (wheat, oat or rice)

You can add more lecithin if you like. Lecithin does not have a taste. This smoothie is jam packed with fiber.

Strawberry Smoothie

Mix in a blender the following ingredients.

1 banana
1-tablespoon of lecithin granules
1-teaspoon of any type of bran
1 cup or more 50:50 rice dream: almond milk
Now add strawberries one by one with the blender on until you get the consistency you like.
1-tablespoon flax seeds
1 or 2 tablespoons sunflower seeds
1-teaspoon sesame seeds
1 tablespoon of flax seed oil

You can add liquid minerals or vitamins to these smoothies and give them an additional nutritional value.

There you have the smoothies that I make. Start making and drinking them and see the health benefits that you'll get

Acne Program - Step 5: Foods to Stop Eating

Even though many dermatologist and doctors don't see the connection between your diet, constipation, a toxic colon, and a toxic liver with the acne that you are suffering from, it does not mean the food you eat is not important in clearing your acne.

If the doctors were right about food and the colon, then they would easily be able to help you clear your acne with their drugs. Drugs can give you temporary relief, it they work at all, but as you use them they can also give you some unpleasant side effects.

In her book, Food And Healing, 1986, Annemarie Colbin, points out,

"In a systems view of the body, input of all kinds relates to output of all kinds. Food, therefore, would have a definite relationship to matter pushed out through the skin. I am continually amazed that dermatologists persist in viewing the skin as merely a protective envelope for the body, ascribing its eruptions to 'viruses' and imprecise malfunctions and supporting the myth that 'diet has nothing to do with acne.'

In my experience, diet has everything to do with acne. Not only did I fix my own bad skin through correct eating but I have seen among my students a number of severe cases - the large purplish kind of acne on cheeks and chins - completely cured within three months by a change of diet."

Foods to Stop Eating

If you smoke, drink alcohol or drink coffee, then this program will not work too well for you. When you have these addictions, your body's minerals and vitamins will be out of balance and it will be difficult for you to achieve any state of good health.

So, here are they foods that you need to stop eating. You don't need to stop eating these foods instantly. Not many people can do this. You need to do this gradually. I know it will be hard to stop eating some of these foods that you have enjoyed, over the years, but you have to ask yourself the question,

* Foods in packages - All foods in packages or boxes are junk food. They are considered dead food and provide no life force to your body. They take from you because they use up minerals, vitamins, and digestive enzymes during digestion. They contain no fiber so they cause constipation.
* Foods with artificial flavors and preservatives - These are non-foods that are super toxic. Your body does not know what to do with them so it stores them in your body as toxic waste.
* Milk, ice cream, hard chesses - these foods cause allergies and cause mucus to form. This mucus coats the colon and other internal surfaces and interferes with the function of that area. Bacteria and other pathogens enjoy living in the mucus film. This mucus also tries to escape through the face when you have too much of it in the body. If you cannot digest dairy products, this can cause you to have acne.
* Sodas are the worst drink you can take. They contain plenty of sugar and phosphoric acid.
* Sugar is considered a white poison. It creates so many health problems in the body that the FDA should outlaw it.
* Salt - avoid salt only because it has iodine. Iodine has been shown to cause acne.

How mental attitude and digestion affect acne

Mental attitude

Acne is an expression of toxins in the body that are not being released through normal channels of elimination, so they come out through the skin. Since mental attitude and thoughts cannot be separate from the body, thoughts and feelings are also being expressed as acne.

Negative thoughts and feelings produce chemicals that are toxic acids. Just like toxic acids created in the colon, the toxic thoughts need to be eliminated through the 5 elimination channels

Acne can be an expression suppressed past traumatic experiences. As a child, when you were exposed to experiences that overwhelm you � constant mental, physical, or sexually abuse, you suppress them. So now as an adult, as your defense system weakens, you're not able to completely suppress this information, so it becomes expressed as acne or other skin disorders. Of course, these suppressed experiences can be expressed as other diseases.

Acne can also be related to the emotion of fear or anxiety. It can also be an expression of holding onto old junkie or unpleasant memories. It's a way of holding on to and burying the junkie or toxic memory into your face. It is these memories that are trying to surface and, in an usual way, asking you to face them. Many times, you and other people may not want to remember them or deal with them.

To deal with them requires a lot of strength and help from a psychotherapist.

Stomach Acid

Your stomach uses Hydrochloric acid (HCl) to break down protein. It also has many other functions,

* Kills pathogens and microbes and prevents them from getting into the colon and blood
* Controls the adsorption of B12
* Controls the adsorption of iron calcium zinc, copper, magnesium and most B-complex vitamins
* Controls the adsorption of vitamin C
* Created indigestion
* Prevents constipation

When you have low levels of HCl chances are that you will be susceptible to getting acne. HCl can be increased by using a digestive enzyme that contains HCl.

Pancreatic Digestive Enzymes

When the food you eat passes the stomach and enters the small intestine, the pancreas releases digestive enzymes and bicarbonate to help complete the digestive process.

The bicarbonate helps to reduce the acid strength in the food coming from the stomach. The digestive enzymes digest carbohydrates, fats, and protein.
